Pregnancy Issues

After the repair of partial anomalous pulmonary venous return, and in the absence of pulmonary hypertension, pregnancy may usually be undergone without unusual risk.

If the repair operation was performed later in life, there may be a risk of right atrial enlargement or atrial arrhythmias. Therefore, these patients should be closely monitored.

It often happens that partial anomalous pulmonary venous return will be first diagnosed during pregnancy. These patients may develop atrial arrhythmias, but they usually complete pregnancy and childbirth without unusual difficulty.

Anyone with congenital heart disease, repaired or non-repaired, should consult with their cardiologist prior to becoming pregnant to review the risks.
